Figures come from 280 skincare quizzes built with RevenueHunt (Built for Shopify), measured over the last 180 days and deduplicated to one quiz per store. Numbers are medians unless labelled "top 10%" (the 90th percentile). They describe what real skincare quizzes actually do, not targets we invented. What the spread tells you

The gap between median and top-10% conversion (8% → 28%) is almost never about design. It's about product mapping and follow-up. A skincare quiz that maps every answer to products and emails the result the same minute lands in that top column far more often than a prettier one that doesn't.


The questions that matter

Across the top quizzes, the same handful of questions show up again and again. Every one earns its place because the answer changes a recommendation, a segment, or a message (the data-worth-collecting rule):

  • How does your skin feel on an average day? The single most common question in top skincare quizzes, and it maps cleanly to skin type without asking shoppers to self-diagnose.
  • What's your main skin concern? Acne, aging, dullness, redness, hyperpigmentation. Drives which actives you recommend, and it's your most powerful segment.
  • Do you have sensitive skin / anything we should avoid? Lets you exclude irritating products, which protects trust.
  • What's your goal? "Clear breakouts," "even skin tone," "a simple routine." Frames the result page and the follow-up email.
  • Age range (optional). Useful only if it changes what you recommend, otherwise cut it.

Keep it to around 6 questions. The benchmark says skincare shoppers finish at that length; pile on more and completion slides.


Recommend a routine, not a product

This is where skincare quizzes earn their keep, and the data is emphatic: 80% of skincare quizzes recommend a routine or bundle, not a single item. Instead of one cleanser, recommend the steps of a routine, each in its own slot: cleanser, serum, moisturizer, SPF.

Get the email right

Email gating is the decision every skincare merchant agonizes over. Here's how the 280 quizzes split, and what each choice costs:

  • 43% gate the email (require it before results) · 32% don't ask · 25% make it optional.
  • Across all verticals, gating captures the most leads but trims completion; optional tends to finish and convert best; none finishes highest but builds no list.

The skincare default

Because most skincare revenue arrives in the follow-up (reorder reminders, routine education), the email is worth requiring. If your completion rate is healthy (above the 88% median), gate it. If completion is fragile, make it optional with a strong incentive, "get your routine + 10% off", rather than dropping the ask entirely. Then connect Klaviyo and send the result within minutes.

Turn skin data into repeat revenue

Skincare answers are unusually valuable because the category is consumable and routine-driven. Put the data to work:

  • Do ask about sensitivities and exclude irritating products. One bad reaction loses a customer for good.
  • Don't gate the email on a 3-question quiz that hasn't earned it, that's the fastest route to 0% conversion in the data.
  • Don't overwhelm beginners with a ten-step routine. Match the depth of the recommendation to their experience.
